Time Saving Tips

I feel like that title needs a disclaimer. Really, is it possible to "save" time. We all get exactly the same amount of minutes in each and every day. There is nothing we can do to to change that. And it's not like we can bank them. If I don't use up all the minutes I have today there is no tacking them on to a busy day next week, they're gone! So maybe it should say "Tips for Making the Most of the Time You Have."

I've been mulling over this subject for quite a while now. Collecting little tidbits from here and there that have been helpful to me and maybe will trigger some ideas for you too. And of course disclaimer #2 fits in here too. These are a few things that have worked for me, this should not in any way be interpreted as a "she has it all together, gets everything done and never wastes time," post. It's just not like that folks! In fact, I had almost decided that maybe I'm the only one who has these issues and these "tips" are things everybody else has known forever. But in talking with some Mommy friends recently I realized again that we've all been there. Some days go better, some fall to pieces. What works for you might or might not work for me but it never hurts to have a new idea or two in your bag of tricks.

So here we go.....

*If you can do it in 5 minutes or less, just take the time to do it right away. Think about it for a second, if you take 3 minutes to make your bed when you get out of it, your room will look MUCH more organized just like that. If the covers are on a heap on the floor you'll be more tempted to throw dirty laundry down there with it and before you know it you've got an hour of cleaning up that could have been done in much less time along the way.

*Look for ways to make waiting time work for you. You can probably empty the dishwasher in the time it takes to heat water for a cup of tea. I don't have a dishwasher so my dishes usually collect during they day and I often wash them while I'm waiting for the macaroni to boil or the hamburger to brown as I make dinner. I'm right there by the stove but I'm still getting something done. And don't write off time you spend waiting at the doctor or waiting for soccer practice to be over. You can keep a book, a couple of blank cards to write notes or coupons to clip/organize in the van where they're handy if you meet up with an unexpected 10-15 minute wait. Of course, if you have really little children waiting time is usually just a matter of survival. In fact there was a time when it happened so rarely that a book would not have worked for me. There's no use reading the second chapter if it's been 6 months since you read the first. Maybe a magazine with short articles would be a better option or a devotional with short stories, whatever works for you. Plus, the next time you have to wait longer than you expected instead of getting uptight and anxious you'll secretly be hoping it lasts as long as possible! =)

*Let the kids help! No, it won't be done the "right" way but it might be better than not at all. Even little  kids can dust, fold washcloths, put their own clean laundry back in the drawer, pick up shoes and toys and sweep up lunch crumbs with a dust pan and brush. It's tempting to think that letting the kids help will only make it worse, and there definitely ARE some things that work that way but there are plenty of things they can do too. I don't recommend turning your toddler loose with a bucket of water on the kitchen floor but hand them a wet rag and let them wipe (at least some of) the jelly off of the chairs.

*Set the timer. We had fallen into the rut at our house where it was more hassle to get the kids to pick up toys before bed than I had energy to deal with at that point in the day so it was easier to put them to bed first and do it myself. But I do want my kids to learn some basic principles like "clean up after yourself," and "Life is not always fun and games," so we started "Five Minute Pick-up." I set the timer for five minutes (bet you didn't see that coming. tee-he!) and they see how much they can get done. Sometimes they aren't finished when the timer beeps but they still get to stop. They enjoy the challenge of racing the timer and they like knowing that it will only last so long. Occasionally there is a reward if we beat the timer but not always. And sometimes we do have to work until we're done so we can vacuum or whatever but it's taken much stress out of my evening routine! The timer tip works for Mommy's too. If there is a job you're avoiding set the timer and tackle it for 20 minutes. Even if you only have half of that stack of papers filed and sorted when the timer beeps it's better than none.

* Do what you DO have time for. I tend to put off jobs like washing the kitchen floor until I have time to "do it right." That doesn't happen very often at my house but I've learned that it only takes a few seconds to grab a napkin and wipe up that sticky juice spot. So even if my floor isn't sparkling at least no one is sticking fast anymore. If you don't have time to scrub the whole bathroom you can still take 30 seconds to wipe the toothpaste off the sink.

* Do double duty. Make 2 recipes of whatever is for dinner tonight and freeze some for later. Or grill extra chicken tonight so you know you'll have leftovers to use in your recipe for dinner tomorrow night.
Heading upstairs for more diapers or another load of laundry?? Grab a couple pairs of shoes or some folded laundry from the last load and take it up with you.

Your turn. Tell me your favorite tips for  "saving time." Trust me, I could use a few more!

Sunny Surprise

Remember this jungle that we tackled last fall?

The bank drops off right behind the house so even when I'm looking out the kitchen window I can't really see what's happening back there. I was quite surprised this week when I stepped out back for something and discovered this.....

I Love daffodils and tulips. They scream, "SPRING" to me! I bought a few last fall and planted them near the house. But since I'm Miss Cheapskate, I usually only purchase a few. Then I have one or two lonely, spindly looking flowers scattered here and there. I know that they multiply so I dream of the day when I'll have  big patches to pick and enjoy on my kitchen table. But being the "chronic movers" that we are, we never stay long enough to get to that point. Since these were all in full bloom before I even realized they were there they obviously aren't being properly enjoyed back there so I picked a big bunch to smile at me from my kitchen table. Love it!

I also found these beauties smiling at me around the corner.

I'm rather anxious to see what else pops up out of the dirt around here now.
I honestly had not even considered that that might be an option.
Not sure why, I guess I just didn't stop to think about it.

Made Me Smile Monday

it's one of those days....

....when my mood just isn't matching the springy flowers and bright sunshine.

.....when I woke up wondering if I had even slept or if a little green elf just snuck in and changed the clock.

.....when I spent the entire morning at the doctor's office. finally dropping the boy off at school at 11:30.

.....when the phone rang at 1:45. nurse, from same boy's school, calls to say he needs a change of clothes. (don't ask!) i go pick him up. he was at school for less then 2 1/2 hours.

.....when  only 4 of the 9 loads of laundry actually got washed. and none of them got folded or put away.

.....when I went to the grocery store for 3 items. and then wandered around like a lots puppy trying to remember what they were.

.....when my husband calls me at the grocery store to let me know, party's cancelled,  I won't be needing the things I went for after all.

.....when my computer decides to shut down and not to wake up again in the middle of writing my post. restart. restart again. third times a charm!

......when all of the sudden I can't stand up straight and all I can think about is, how soon can I get to the couch and lay down with that heat mat on my back? oh wait, the couch is full of laundry waiting to be folded.

......when little miss decides that coughing is not enough. we must add fever and funky breathing to our ailments and spend the rest of the day being held.

true story. all of it. I don't mean to complain. it's just one of those days when if you hear....

....the hubs say "I'll pick up pizza and bring it home for dinner."

 .....It just MAKES YOU SMILE!

Use it Up -- Cooking Edition

When we were preparing to move last summer one of my goals was to get the cupboards and freezer cleaned out. To use stuff up. My plan was to have everything in the freezer as ready to serve as possible. I thought we would use the stuff I made in the busy week of packing before the move but lots of kind people brought us tasty stuffs, so most of my preparations weren't needed. In the end it worked out perfectly, those frozen meals became lifesavers while we were living in kitchen chaos for several weeks.

I got really intentional about planning meals around what I had on hand and really creative about using/substituting what I had for what I wished I had. It was really kind of a fun challenge. It almost became a game for me. I was surprised how easy it was once I adjusted my thinking a bit. I've usually been one of those cooks who can only think of things to make with what I'm out of......the freezers full of chicken so I'm really inspired to make meatloaf. Does this happen to anyone else??

Now that we've moved and I've been trying to do a form of once a month grocery shopping the need for creativity continues. Here are just a few of my concoctions/inventions lately.

Invention #1-- I had partial cans of beans and corn leftover in the fridge so I sauteed chicken tenders and topped them with the beans and corn as well as chopped tomatoes and fresh cilantro. I added some cheese and ranch dressing and YUM! I wish I had some leftover beans and corn in my fridge right now!

Inspiration  #2 -- Ok so this is not original with me of course but......Believe it or not, my kids are not big on hot dogs. They'll eat them in the summertime because it's fun to roast them over the fire but their just not fans. This is ok with me for the most part. I don't see a need to convince them to like over processed-who-knows-what, but I had a bunch of hot dogs in the freezer leftover from a cookout in the fall and I wanted them used up. I made these pretzel dogs with my favorite soft pretzel recipe--big hit!

Solution #3 -- Hide it in the soup! I very sweet friend had given me ready-to-freeze mashed sweet potatoes, which I thought were delicious, but again the kids were not convinced. I was making "use up what's in the fridge" veggie soup one day and I decided to add some of the mashed sweet potatoes to it. Worked like a charm! The kids of coarse never knew it was in there and it made the soup nice and thick, just perfect for little people to scoop up easier.

Idea #4 -- Garbage to gourmet! =) After baking potatoes for a breakfast casserole I cut a bit deeper when I took the skins off and turned them into these tasty appetizers. Don't they look like something you would order as a appetizer when you go out to eat?? And to think I usually just throw the skins in the garbage bucket.

I even tried my hand at homemade tortillas one day. I had a rice and beans mixture leftover  that I knew the kids would turn their noses up at. I decided my best options was to hide it in tortillas and cover it with cheese sauce as a disguise. But there was not one tortilla in the house so I made some. You've already noticed that there isn't a picture of them and for good reason! They weren't exactly picture worthy but they didn't taste bad and they did the trick.

Thanks to my good friend Google you can find recipes for almost anything these days. I found a recipe that called for biscuit mix, which I did not have. 2 minutes on Google and I found a substitute. Love it!!

And of course I have to mention my all time favorite use-it-up tip......make sure you always have plenty of cheese on hand. Everything tastes better with cheese on it. If your invention doesn't turn out quite like you imagined--sprinkle some cheese on it. If you left something in the freezer a little too long and it's gotten a bit freezer tasting--sprinkle some cheese on it. If you left it in the oven a few minutes to long and it's a bit dark on top--sprinkle some cheese on it. It's a miracle cure I tell you!~~

I'm still a work in progress on this venture so if you have an idea for using stuff up I'd love to hear it!
